xboxcircle preview

here's a brief article about Huxley on xboxcircle. hardly any new info, except this tidbit regarding the unreal 3 engine being used:

A depth-of-field feature is incorporated, which blurs objects in the distance depending on what the player is focusing on.

distance blur. nice.

Huxley to use SpeedTree RT

according to this article on teamxbox, Huxley will be using the SpeedTree RT technology produced by Interactive Data Visualations to render its in-game foliage. from the article:

SpeedTreeRT delivers low-polygon, highly realistic trees and plants, with adjustable wind effects, seamless LOD transitions, and an included library of hundreds of tree, plant and marine models representing more than 170 core species.

This is the same technology in use for several other upcoming games for the Xbox 360, most notably Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the Xbox 360, wherein the trees, plants, and bushes, as I'm sure you've seen, are literally breathtaking.

separate fees for Huxley

this month's official xbox magazine [yes, actual treeware] has a Q&A on the xbox 360 and the changes with xbox live. in it is this question and answer:

Q: Can I subscribe to a massively multiplayer online game with a Silver account?

A: Yes. While specific details are up to the individual publisher, massively multiplayer games will likely have separate fees, and you can play MMOs and pay those additional fees with a Silver membership.

so that made me ponder, "is Huxley going to have separate charges aside from just purchasing the game [which, if next generation rumors are true, is gonna be like 60$ anyway]?" and i'm thinking to myself that this is likely, it is an MMO. i have no idea at all what those fees might be, but if they exist, i would peg them at somewhere between 5$ and 15$ a month, as this appears to be common for current pc MMOs. it sure would be nice if some kind of deal was worked out with microsoft due to already having purchased xbox live gold [cuz silver just ain't gonna cut it], but with the answer above, that seems unlikely. thoughts?

VEHICLES

vehicles within Huxley do not appear to be immediately attainable. all information so far indicates that as a player, you must level up while also obtaining some cash in order to purchase the available vehicles. i like this idea alot. from this e3 review on gamespy:

a players statistics, rank, and the amount of money will determine what kind of weapons, armor, ammo, and vehicle they're able to buy.

there have also been references to the ability to learn new skills which may include the ability [permission] to operate certain vehicles. if this is true, it could translate to battles where the drivers of vehicles actually know what they're doing. i cannot tell you how many times a halo wortie driver has killed me or my friends through his horrible driving, or how many times i've said as a result that people should have to be certified on vehicles before they can just grab one and take it into battle. another benefit here is that n00bs won't be able to drive anything at all, which is obviously a good thing, cuz "n00bs are teh suck".

so what i've got here is the list of vehicles seen or heard of so far, with eyes and ears wide open for more additions as i'm sure there will be. so enjoy, and don't say i never gave you anything.

THE ARMORED PERSONNEL CARRIER

this is the sweetest ride i've seen in a game for some time so we'll start with the Armored Personnel Carrier [APC]. when they say "armored", webzen isn't kidding. this thing looks like you could drop it down an active volcano and expect to see it blow through the side and drive out. everywhere you look is metal plating. even the wheels have armored hubcaps and there's not even a windshield, just a slit in the front end. i'm just not seeing you gain access to the APC unless someone inside invites you in. oh, and also it moves fast so good luck slowing it down.

in one of the demo videos, i saw seven guys exit one of these [see below screenshot], so it can carry at least that many, maybe more [seven is an odd number]. you can also enter and exit the vehicle from the rear and the right side simultaneously [likely from the left as well, though this is unconfirmed]. the benefit here is that you can quickly exit with sufficient force so as to avoid vulnerablitiy when exiting the APC. i've seen it pull up out of nowhere and vacate seven guys in about 3 seconds. now that's a formidable entrance.

and speaking of formidable, near as i can tell, its got at least two high-powered guns on each side, likely either each operated independently by players inside, or by one gunner who controls them all. either way, i want one.

downside is that one of the translating presenters in one of the demo videos indicated that the APC was for high level players and is very expensive, so its likely that obtaining one of these APCs will be extremely difficult [i wonder if you can pool your cash with other players to acquire one of these bad boys for your clan to roll in].

flipside to the downside: my girlfriend asks me earlier if you can taxi people around with the APC, as in have other players pay you to drive them around. obviously i don't know, but that's damn entrepreneurial of her, and i was impressed. i'm probably gonna try it.

THE HUXLEY HOG

so named because to me it resembles halo's warthog, but enclosed. it appears to hold two maybe three guys, which may turn out to be the perfect vehicle for the average player rolling into battle with a single partner. it also seems to be the economic middle ground as far as vehicles go as well.

looking pretty well armored, the top of this vehicle sports a multi-barreled machine gun turret which is sure to spew hot lead into the tailend of its adversaries. no info yet on how one enters or exits the vehicle, but in the second picture below, the plate behind the player may just be a hatch. either that or the turret on top opens up, but that seems less likely and more awkward.

THE MOTORCYCLE?

is it a motorcycle? not really. but its not anything else either. its got four wheels but it sure ain't a car. and also its my web site, so there. lol. this looks like your basic run-of-the-mill get-you-there vehicle. it doesn't appear to have any armor at all, nor does it apear to have any mounted weaponry on it. this may be the low end of purchasable vehicles within the game.

THE HELICOPTER

no pictures of the helicopter yet, only a reference to it by kijong kang in this interview with teamxbox where he was quoted as saying:

They can go to the battlefield on foot or by vehicle such as cars, choppers or by an elevator. It really depends on the kind of battlefield.

THE TRAIN

mass transit, baby! for all of us low-level players who don't have enough cash and stats to get us a nicer ride, we can hop on the elevated trains to get us from place to place within our cities. i've been on trains like these, and i wasn't even in the Huxley world. all i can say is watch your back and get yourself some cash. lol.

shoulder emblems

in several shots now i've seen shoulder emblems, both on sapiens and on alternatives. the one on the sapien i would describe as a weird little monkey face in a circle. the one on the alternative i would describe as a skull with either a large lower jaw or something attached to the underside of the skull. i can't see how these would be part of the uniforms, therefore i think that they are some sort of identifiable emblem; likely either personal, clan, or guild emblems. somewhat reminiscent of halo 2, but welcome nonetheless.

SYNOPSIS

named best online game at this year's e3 by hardcore gamer magazine, Huxley looks to be one of the most promising games coming out for the xbox 360. i realize that's saying quite alot given the sheer volume of games being produced for the new console, however, i am in love with where this game seems to be headed. breaking ground in the virtually non-existent genre of MMOFPS, Huxley will appeal to gamers everywhere, crossing several genres as it garners its following. whether you play pc games or you're [gonna be] an xbox360 gamer, whether you play MMOs, FPSs, or RPGs, Huxley definitely has the potential to feed your addiction. from webzengames.com:

GAME DESCRIPTION

Huxley is a massively multiplayer online first-person shooting game (MMOFPS) developed by the H-Studio of global online entertainment company, WEBZEN Inc. Huxley takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where human beings have mutated and are divided into two opposing races, Sapiens and Alternative. At the center of the battle for survival is Lunarites, a promising new energy source that both sides seek to obtain. Forced to battle against one another for the continuance of each race, Sapiens and Alternatives are willing to do whatever it takes to wipe out the conflicting race and gain control of the world and its resources.

STORY

In near future, Nuclearites bombard the World. Destructive earthquakes, massive tidal waves and dramatic climate changes wreak havoc around the globe, isolating continents and driving the human race into chaos. Those who survive the destruction dream of tranquility, but an eruption among the human race and the appearance of horrible mutants drives the world into further disorder. Racism and oppression cause rebellious uprisings and war that divide the landscape between two powers: Sapiens and Alternative, At the heart of the war emerges a powerful energy source the Lunarites created by Huxley, a scientist and possible savior.

Both factions seek glory and victory, fighting mercilessly for the Lunerites and their very existence.

FEATURES

I. FPS IN A PERSISTENT WORLD.
Huxley delivers the excitement and rich gameplay experience of an MMORPG while combining the knuckle-whitening action of an FPS. Players can communicate with each other in a virtual online city, and participate in side battles with the intuitive PvP (player vs. player) system. Everything a character does in the Huxley world directly affects the success of not only the individual, but also of their race and party; from battles to behaviors, all interactions are linked to the survival of a character’s entire race.

II. LARGE-SCALE BATTLES.
Huxley goes past traditional death match FPS gameplay by challenging players to adapt to new forms of combat to protect the interests of the camp. Servers will be solely dedicated to accommodate millions of users engaged in fast paced, large-scale combat. Players will require strategy and cooperation to achieve victory. Extensive multiplayer battle modes are available each with a variety of unique fighting techniques and special characteristics.

III. ADVANCED A.I. AND QUESTS.
Huxley has advanced A.I. that rivals other online games. Enemies in Huxley demonstrate remarkable intelligence, which can be used to a player’s advantage or demise. Quests in Huxley will take players on paths of intrigue to uncover conspiracies resulting in confrontations. Each quest is continually updated so players feel as though they are enjoying a new story mode every time they play.

IV. CHARACTER GROWTH AND UNIQUE PLAY STYLES.
The characters in Huxley are continuously growing, which is rare in FPS games. Players are able to enhance their own combat styles by obtaining out-of-this-world weapons and new skills, which in turn continuously challenges players to adopt different gameplay styles as they progress.

WEAPONS

not much is known about the weapons available in game yet. the information released so far indicates that when you begin the game you will be issued certain weapons and as you level up and make money, you'll be able to upgrade to better or different weaponry [possibly depending on your race]. there are stores in the city maps where you can make these purchases. there are also general marketplaces where those wishing to trade or supply firearms for other means may do so. an example given at one of the presentations was that of one player giving better weaponry to a lower player in order to bring him into his clan. such a scenario may not seem likely, but plans in regard to the economy with firearms is still not known. from this e3 review on gamespy:

a players statistics, rank, and the amount of money will determine what kind of weapons, armor, ammo, and vehicle they're able to buy.

in addition, this teamxbox interview with webzen's kijong kang indicated:

Players can get various kinds of weapons from stores and other places. Also, they can get new weapons while fighting. They can store their weapons in the personal inventory and select them according to the kind of battle or mission.

new weapons while fighting? can i grab them off corpses? too early to tell, but all signs point to at least a fair variety of weaponry. below are the ones i've seen, either in still images or screencaps i obtained from any of the released Huxley videos.

ENTRY LEVEL RIFLE

this is just a guess, but it seems that all the characters who look the same [ie, low-level grunts] are carrying this weapon. chunky as rifles go but it looks like it can bring some pain. i also notice two smaller barrels under the single barrel on top. multi-weapon?

THE YELLOW GUN

one of the great things about covering a game that hasn't been released yet is that since i don't know the names of these weapons, i get to make them up. so this sleek, apparently fully automatic rifle [if you watch the videos] has been dubbed "the yellow gun" until i hear different.

THE SHOTGUN

what's an fps without a shotgun? nothing like a shottie to the face to get someone's attention. or one in each hand like this alteraver if you really wanna make a statement. from this angle, i gather his statement is "bring it!".

THE BIG YELLOW GUN aka THE RED GUN

i've seen it in two different colors, but its likely to be the same gun. whether yellow or red, you can tell this thing packs a whallop. in one image, i noticed the word "launcher" on the lower side near the stock, surrounding either a dial or an indicator of some sort. grenade launcher? energy launcher? small monkey launcher? only time will tell.

the third screenshot of this beast shows two quasi-wings as they unfold and retract in the video as if to chamber the next round. i'm loving it already. big gawdy weapons with which to kick a whole lotta tail.

THE HELICOPTER MINIGUN

can you call this anything else? and boy does it kick ass. just pull the trigger and lean back. you do not want to be on the business end of this belt-fed demon from hell. when you're lugging this thing around, i guarantee you won't have time to bleed.

RACES

updated 8/26/2005 12:22:34 AM

THE ORIGIN OF THE RACES

within the world of Huxley, objects called Lunarites have crashed into the moon which in turn caused the moon's shattered mass to collide with the earth, along with the Lunarites. the resulting biochemical reactions left the evolution of the human species in disarray. three separate races, each race with its own two variants, have emerged and now fight for survival. the competing races are Sapiens, Alternatives, and Hybrids. the Sapiens retain the most visual similarity to the original humans while the Alternatives tend to be larger and more brutish in appearance. the Hybrids are a genetic mix of the first two.

the below text was taken directly from the Huxley documentation video:

the moon fell apart after being struck by a group of the Nuclearites. its crashed parts fell onto the earth causing a deep impact. not only did the Nuclearites' effects take out more than the 80 percent of the global population by crashing on the moon, but also gave birth to a new breed of human species due to its biochemical reaction to both the moon and the earth, the original species was called "Sapiens" whereas the other "Alternative". for some time, the two were at ease but problems had grown to the extreme level as time passed. on the 29th day of december, 20xx the great species war broke out. it still continues.

all the races and variants as they are currently known are detailed below, along with the english text that accompanies the images in the Huxley documentation video.

SAPIENS: ONE

They are individualistic and liberal characters as a human being by overcoming difficult and dangerous environment. They attained the prudent and skillful mind, and a strong pride about themselves. They are skillful with every kind of equipment and have the ability to maximize 100% equipment potential.

Their existence and excessive pride as the superior class of the Earth had caused the war. They had ignored and insulted all the other species as an early power of the society construction. The suppression policy of 'One' over other species alienated 'Syn'. The other sapiens species after the war with Alternative, 'One' allied with 'Syn' again to rule over the world as a superior species.

key facts: the Ones started it all. they started the war with all the other races cuz they're arrogant bastards who wanted to control everything. super prideful. however, since the war, the Ones and the Syns have allied in their common cause of now ruling together. also, this seems to indicate that the different races will serve different purposes or even different playing styles for players, and that the Ones can distinctively max out on "equipment potential", either in the full capacity of the weapon, or possibly in what they can upgrade to. the implication of course is that at least some other race does have this same potential.

SAPIENS: SYN

'Syn' has snow white skin, long and slim body shape, and beautiful face. Their smart and agile movement and sheer abilities have great power enough to reverse the war situation at a moment.

In the early stage of society reconstruction, they could avoid much oppression thanks to their good looking. But they were a confusion as strange species on Earth and got discrimination from 'One' after the war. 'Syn' volunteered to make alliance with 'One' only for their own survival.

During war, 'One' observed that 'Syn' killing the Alternatives cruelly and got strongly impressed after that 'One' could not discriminate 'Syn' thoughtlessly. 'Syn' is guaranteed an equal position to 'One' after Alternative independence. But 'Syn' still keep their callous character, trusting no one.

breakdown: the Syns are the pretty ones. very agile and slim in nature, but they wield some crazy cool powers which have the capacity to turn the tide of a given battle or situation. during the war, they were less ostricized by the Ones cuz they were prettier and because their skill in battle with the Alternatives was quite impressive to the Ones. since the war, the Syns have allied with the Ones in order to maintain their own survival, but the Syns don't trust them at all. they don't trust anyone.

ALTERNATIVE: ALTERAVER

The impression from their big body, tough face, strong and brave mind of 'Alteraver' gave them the image of an warrior. They are simple, devoted to their society, warm-hearted and kind. But 'Alteraver' never forgive enemies who threat existence of themselves and their precious things. They trust others easily because they are naive and have little intelligence, so they often tend to be imbued with bad ideology. 'Alteraver' use high-powered weapons empowered by their physical strength and power. A troop of 'Alteraver' has enough power to make their enemy demoralized.

They used to fight on the frontline of battle at independence war. While they under the oppression of 'One', they learned by force to operate heavy equipment. Those skills helped 'Alteraver' to build their country after the independence.

the goods: the alteravers are the big dudes. large in size with a face that tells you to piss off. they're the quintessential tribal warrior. simple, loyal, even warm-hearted, but not so intelligent, and way too trusting. their weaponry tends to be high-powered in nature, and pretty much everyhwere they go, they kick ass. i translate "has enough power to make their enemy demoralized" as "if you see them coming, you might need a clean pair of shorts" or whatever they wear in this dystopian world.

ALTERNATIVE: ALTERNIX

They have the most obvious mutated features with the dark gray skin, eye with the unclear and vague eyeball, and the calcareous hair. Their fast movement and smart sense for the battle are suitable for infiltration to enemy's zone and assassination.

Heterogeneous appearance of 'Alternix' made them obstructed, so they get introvert character. They are sensitive and never talk too much. Their unique hair style shows up their special artistic sense.

bottom line: the alternix are the fast ones. sneaky and quick, with big spiky white hair. they keep quiet, and make themselves known only when need be. artistic in nature, but if you're looking for assassins and someone who can get in unnoticed, this is your race.

HYBRID: MUTANT

no text on the hybrids yet, but these guys seem to run things behind the scenes, or at the least they seem to control the ai monsters that like to chase, stab, and kill everyone else. this race is a hybrid of the Sapiens and the Alternatives. they are a non-playable race.

HYBRID: MONSTER

the other non-playable race, these hybrid monsters look like the bugs straight out of starship troopers, but a little smaller. they run in packs and attack in waves; large collective swarms with common targets, namely you. i'm so looking forward to killing me some bugs.
